As when buying other pets, you need to consider, which type of rodent will fit best with your lifestyle and needs.
If you buy the pet for a child, a rodent that does not sleep during daytime is the best choice.
You must also consider whether you want one or two pet rodents which will depend on your time for talking with and fondling the pet.
Most rodents are favourable pets while they are easy and cheap to own. Notice, though, that each pet rodent has different needs and personalities, which makes it necessary to search for information on the internet or in books, before you choose your type of pet rodent.
It is important to prepare the cage before you purchase the rodent or rabbit. Once you bring the new pet home, you should install it in its cage straight away in order for the pet to calm down and become familiar with its new surroundings.
It will most likely hide for a while, which is perfectly normal.
If you already have a rodent or rabbit which you want to share a cage with the new pet, it should not cause major problems.
You should clean the cage and spread new wood chips before installing the new pet rodent in the cage.
It is very important that both pets start on neutral grounds. It is advisable to spread some pellets or other food in the cage which will keep the pets busy. If you notice any negative reactions, like fights, you should separate the pets and try installing them in the same cage again later.
