Wellbeing

Regular care is necessary for keeping your dog healthy. You need to care for your dog, considering the following areas: fur, teeth, nails, eyes and ears. It is important for the dog to get used to care already as a puppy, to make it familiar with care and the different tools.

Fur, ears and eyes

Most dogs need regular baths. Once a month should suffice, unless the dog is dirty or smells bad. Make sure that the dog is wet all over, though not the head, and rub in the dog shampoo, after which the dog’s fur is rinsed carefully. Regular shampoo for humans should never be used for dogs as it risks making skin and fur dry.

Gently clean the ears with a clean piece of cloth, and if necessary, add a few ear drops. Only clean any visible parts of the dog and never introduce anything into the ear as it may damage the internal ear.

Check the eyes and remove any kind of stains. Look for irritation of the eye, redness, etc. when in doubt, contact your local veterinarian.

Teeth

Some dogs do not receive sufficient dental cleaning. Even if the dog is offered dental cleaning chews, its teeth should be brushed regularly to avoid tartar and plaque.

Always use a special dog tooth paste, never one for humans. Usually, there should be no reason to rinse afterwards.

Nails

When you can hear the dog’s nails on the floor as it walks, the nails need trimming. To keep the trimming under control, a special nail trimmer for dogs should be used.

Maintain a firm grip with on hand on the dog’s paw, while trimming the nails with the other hand. Be careful not to cut off too much as it may cause unpleasant infections.
