Songbird or domestic bird

When you choose bird species, you will have several things to consider; How much time will you be able to spend with your bird, and what do you have to offer the bird? Do you want a talking bird, an affectionate bird or a songbird? Do you want one or several birds? There are many possibilities, and it is important to choose a species which corresponds to your specific needs and possibilities.

Animals with mates

Remember that birds in nature live with their mates, which means that if you only have one bird, you will have to spend a lot of time with it.

If you want a tamed bird, you should wait a while before you buy a second bird, but later on it will be an advantage to have two birds in order to fulfil their social needs. The new bird will be tamed in a very short time.

Stressless home transport

It is advisable to choose your bird from a distance of the cage as it scares easily. Be sure to check the condition and feather coat of the bird and also check its beak, eyes, feather coat, chest and claws.

You should take the bird home in a cardboard box or travel case to ensure a comfortable journey with the least possible stress. Once the bird arrives at its new home, it should not socialise with other birds for about two weeks to avoid passing on diseases.

Cage or aviary

You can choose to keep your bird in a cage or in an aviary, possibly an outdoor aviary. It is important that the cage or aviary have the right size to optimise the bird’s environment.

If you have more than one bird, the cage has to be twice as wide as the wingspans in order for to birds being able to fly pass each other. An outdoor aviary usually consists of an outdoor area and an indoor room.

It is important to clean the cage or aviary before bringing the bird home. When you arrive at home with the bird, you should install it in the cage right away in order for the bird to relax and become used to its new surroundings. Most likely, the bird will be rather quiet to begin with, which is perfectly normal.
